Reguarding GT3 Weather
Published on January 27, 2005 By TN Brat! In Permissions
Ok, well I've tried contacting Tiggz through email, and I'm unsure if he responded, because of my pc crash last week, and because it's been over two weeks since I sent the mail, I thought I'd give this a try...

Tiggz, may I, please, have permission to re-skin your GT3 Weather Object? It's just so awesome that it could almost stand alone as an application..and I know it's a DX app, but I mean an appliction like SysMetrix or Rainlendar...

Seriously, I just love it and would like to use it all the time, but it doesn't match very many of the skin suites I use. So, basically I'd just like to change the art.

I may also ask permission to just use the scripts in other DX objects, but for now, permission to re-skin it would just thrill me to death.

As always, I'll, of course, give you full credit, supply the proper links, and send it to you for approval, before upload, if you'd like.

Thanks,
Arlind

TN, he will get back to you I'm sure... I've been in touch with him before, and he's just really busy, but he did eventually get back to me.... he is, afterall, the almighty TIGGZ... imagine how many people from this site email him everday.

RPGuere , yeah I know he's a busy man indeed...Ive done a few others and it took him a while that time too, but the difference is that he may have already responded...Just like I asked permission from Momegil to post my Toon Tabs for Object Dock, and I deleted the email before I could read it, thanks to some silly docklet that I was using! In this case I've not gotten mail in days and there's somethng seriously wrong on my computer....the other I toasted last week....so I just wanted to ask again, I thought about emailing him again, but I don't have an addressbook any more! I didn't think it was a big deal since I've waited over 2 weeks...

HEY....that reminds me...What about a lesson in permission and porting Etiquette? I have several questions in that area...

Like what would be the appropiate amount of time to wait after you've contacted an artist, before you "bug" him again?

What is the best way to approch the subject...(as you guys can see sometimes I ramble), but then again don't want to be too blunt...

Where is the best place to attempt contact? Sould one go straight for email or comments sections or what?

Is there EVER (and I know the answer is NO, but it would seem that there are those out there that disagree with me) at time when after repeated attempts to contact the artist that you can go ahead and upload the skin....as long as you give FULL credit to the artist (I've been holding on to my toon tabs since I bough OD PLus & I know Butch has some Inspirate things...it bites to hold on to them sometimes, because I want his...LOL but it's wrong to do the next question)

Is redistributing someone elses skin through email proper?

If you're not able to get permisson is it "ok" to post a screen shot and tell people to email you if they want it?

I do know the answers to some of those questions, I just wanted to give examples.

I wonder...could we set up several polls to get the "best" answer for those and other questions...then post the final results as a guide? Anyone?

Simple single email is the best approach. It gives the original author an opportunity to outline expectations for a port. ie. some want to see the port before posting, some just want a link to it after it's posted, etc.

This Permissions board would be my second choice if I didn't have the original author's email and here I would offer up a way for the original author to contact me by email.

As for distribution....none whatso ever, in any fashion, without permission.

As for a screenshot, if'n your just doing it to show off your cool desktop and you disclaim that whatever port you made that's being shown in the screenshot is not for distribution so don't ask then I think a screenshot would be fine.

Well, thanks Essencay, but I knew the answers to those other than the first...I only put the other questions because everytime I see a "rip" the "ripper" makes some long stupid excuse about not knowing he had to get permission or how to get it...

And believe me I think for the most part when ever someone says that they are full of it. Just the other day I called someone on a skin the "made from a screen shot at WinCustomize.com"....The sad part was that the preview image he used for his skin was actually the "screen shot" in question, he just pasted a pic of his skin on it....but the funny part is that the screen shot was of a port and it actually said something to the effect of "thanks for the permission...permission included" He didn't even bother to remove the other guy's name the start panel...then he had the nerver to actually include a permission for anyone to use the skin in anyway they wanted, as long as they rememeber the he made the skin from a screen shot.

Now tell me he did't know he needed the permission or how to get it?...LOL The to top it all off he removed the skin, but left a message that anyone that wanted it should email him...

So, basicallt my point was that a guide somwhere would be helpful...as a matter of fact it would be really nice to add it to an agreement page BEFORE the person can upload a skin....

Like with the new set up here...say I made a port and I checked the "port" box and hit submit...instead of starting the upload, then being redirected to the page that says the 5 day thins and the give credit thing...Since I checked the box redirect to a guideline page for ports so that I then I have to check an "I agree" box before my skin start to upload.

Then no one could EVER claim they didn't know again...not here anyway, and it wouldn't even effect the people that aren't uploading ports, because theirs cold begin the upload and redirect just like it is now....

I know that there's the after upload thing about giving credit, but by then it's too late, see what I mean?

Just a suggestion. I tend to catch a lot of rips, because I do a whole lot of browsing and collecting, to the point where I reconize who made what...or at least that someone else made it first...then I go on the hunt to find where I saw the skin before....and honestly it happens a LOT.

I think there is a 75 year copyright after the original owner is dead....so you've got a long wait.
on Jan 27, 2005
Actually I thight it was just 75 years, but that't not what I was meaning. Most of my skins are ports and I always get permission, and when I can't I either just don't make the skin or if I make it for a screen shot, it sits on my pc until I burn it. Sometimes like with the AeroCyberskin ports...I had only really made them for myself, but Nikos suggested I upload them...and with those I also had to get the Aero half of the permissions, so I sent the letter and waited...never bothering the person again, lucky for me permissions was granted from all...

And really, if I was sure that Tiggz hadn't yet answered I'd still be waiting, that's just me, plus I have plenty of other things to do while waiting ....but others aren't always as laid back about the whole thing, and I've even seen someone get nasty when they had to wait
on Jan 28, 2005
I make lots of skins for myself that are direct matches to others work. Mainly because I want stuff that simply isn't available. Only a few times have I asked to upload. I guess I got back to late to say anything new on the subject...Essancy said it all pretty well. Then main thing to remember is never ever upload without permission. I would wait maybe a few weeks before asking again if I got no reply. And the best way to ask... simply ask. No need to tip toe around. Just say, "hey, I love your so and so skin, I made one to go with it, can I upload?" Not really any need to be afraid to ask. I've actually just started something where I'm going to make a bunch of walls to match WB I love that don't have matching walls already.
on Jan 28, 2005
Thanks for your input RPGere, doens't matter if you are "late"...It's just as important to hear your thoughts, so that others will see that the suggestions made by Essancy on how to handle permissions isn't just his opinion, but more like general guides.
I'l be really interested in seeing your walls, so good luck on those permissions!
I'm still waiting on Tiggz, though...LOL
